Discover Tocumwal's Future!

Tocumwal, with its stunning Murray River and charming town, is gearing up for an exciting transformation! We're planning to enhance our town centre over the next 20 years to make it even more enjoyable for everyone.

Berrigan Shire Council is preparing for these changes through exciting projects and careful planning to help guide the development of the Tocumwal Town Centre over the next 20 years.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the draft concept plans for Tocumwal's Town Centre. We’ve listened to what you had to say, and now we’re ready to share what we heard.

All submissions have been handed over to the concept designers, who will work on refining the designs over the next few weeks based on the feedback they’ve received.

FUTURE TOCUMWAL: WHAT WE HEARD

The below information summarises the findings from the recent community engagement on the future development of Tocumwal. Collateral was released on Monday, 17 February 2025 and ran for a total of 5 weeks, closing on Sunday, 23 March 2025.

A total of 45 written submissions were received, supplemented by various community engagement efforts, including pop-up events, social media campaigns, letterbox drops, flyers in shop windows, displays in local libraries and the Visitor Information Centre (VIC) and local newspaper articles. Flyers were handed out at local events to maximise public participation and feedback.

Several key themes were identified through community submissions and feedback:

PEDESTRIAN CROSSING
A need for a pedestrian crossing from Tattersalls Hotel to the Foreshore Building was noted.

UPGRADE TO BAROOGA STREET
There were requests for an upgrade to Barooga Street, including the installation of kerb and gutter infrastructure. The need for formal, signed, and sealed parking for long vehicles was also mentioned.

ISSUES WITH DENILIQUIN STREET AND TRUCK TRAFFIC
Concerns regarding the median strip and the volume of truck traffic along Deniliquin Street were raised.

CARPARK DESIGN OPTIONS
Feedback on carpark design highlighted the following points:

  • Support for incorporating solar panels on carparks, similar to the Mulwala Waterski Club initiative.

  • A slight preference for Option 2 over Option 1. Respondents noted the importance of maintaining the heritage character of the area.

  • A suggestion to provide space for the Rotary Op Shop in the new buildings.

TREE OF KNOWLEDGE
Preserving the Tree of Knowledge and maintaining traffic flow in front of the tree were noted as priorities.

BOAT RAMP ACCESS
Regarding boat ramp access, feedback was divided, with a slight preference for closing the ramp access beside the Tree of Knowledge. If the access were closed, there would alternate routes explored.

RIVER PARKLET
Option 1 for the River Parklet was the preferred choice among respondents.
