My Bins

We have a three-bin system (organics, recycling and general waste) for residents and small businesses to dispose of their waste correctly.

What is the 3 bin waste system?

There are three kerbside bins in the Berrigan Shire area:

The three bins are:

  • One 240L GREEN LID BIN for organics (garden and food waste) - weekly collection
  • One 240L YELLOW LID BIN for recycling - fortnightly collection
  • One 240L RED LID BIN for general waste - fortnightly collection

What if my bin wasn't emptied?

There may have been a change of driver or route and the collection time of your service has changed; remember bins need to be out the night before the scheduled day of collection.

Your waste/recycle/organics bin may have been contaminated, or your bin was too heavy and was unable to be emptied.

If your bin has not been collected by 4.30pm on the day of collection, please complete this bin service request form, or contact us.

What if my bin has been stolen or damaged?

If your bin has been stolen or damaged, report it to us, by completing our bin service request form or contacting our Customer Experience team.

What if I run out of compostable liners?

If you run out of liners, you can empty organic materials straight into your green-lidded organics bins. Please don't use any organic liners that aren't the Council provided green liner.

The organic caddy liners are available from the Council Office, each Library or please call 1300 240 832 to order them to be delivered to your house.

If move house, do I take my bins with me?

No you don't take bins with you when you move.

The bins are allocated to the property and not to the person at the property. Each bin has an individual serial number which is recorded against the property. This also allows Council to return the bins if they are found abandoned.

I have just moved into a new house and there is no organics caddy?

Organics caddies are allocated to a property. If yours is missing or damaged please attend the Council office to arrange a replacement.

How much is my annual kerbside collection service?

Kerbside waste collection charges for 2024-25 are $494.00

You have the option to request additional bins, for an additional fee. If you wish to do so, please complete this bin request form or contact us.

How do I sort food waste from my general household rubbish?

Each household has a kitchen tidy bin and compostable liners especially to hold food waste. These liners can then be placed in your new organics bin.

If you run out of liners, you can empty organic materials straight into your green-lidded organics bins.

The organic caddy liners will be available from the Council Office, each Library or please call 1300 240 832 to order them to be delivered to your house.

What if I already compost and don’t need a green lidded (organics) bin?

The new green lid organics bin can be seen as an extension to the great work you’re already doing. And, the new service can accept things that your compost heap or pet may not like – things such as citrus, onions, bones, weeds and diseased and infected fruit or vegetables.

As a community we pay for many services as part of our rates that benefit the community, even if every individual resident may not utilise them. Reducing the pressure on landfill and generating a valuable resource for our region’s agricultural industries helps Council to reduce the cost of landfill space into the future.

The green lidded organics bin will also take material that is not suitable for home compost such as meat bones.

How can I find out more?

You will be provided with detailed information about the new 3 bin system in the lead-up to its introduction.  In the meantime, you can find further information on our website, facebook or by phoning Customer Experience on 03 5888 5100.
