Berrigan Shire Council will be required to hold a by-election following the New South Wales (NSW) Electoral Commission's declaration that 14 councils, including Berrigan Shire, did not meet the necessary requirements to proceed to the scheduled election on 14 September 2024.

Berrigan Shire received only seven nominations for the eight available councillor positions. As a result, a by-election must be held to fill the remaining vacancy. The date of the by-election is yet to be determined, as coordination is needed among the 14 councils involved.

"We understand the importance of this process and are committed to working closely with the NSW Electoral Commission to ensure that the election for the last councillor takes place as soon as possible after 14 September 2024," said Berrigan Shire CEO, Karina Ewer. "We are eager to resolve this matter quickly so that we can continue to serve our community effectively."

Once all 14 councils have agreed to a new proposed date from the NSW Electoral Commission, a legal instrument will be created to set the election date. After the Electoral Commissioner has signed this document, the confirmed date will be communicated to the public by both Council and the NSW Electoral Commission.

"We appreciate the community's patience during this time and encourage anyone with questions regarding the by-election to reach out to the NSW Electoral Commission directly," CEO Karina Ewer added.
