I hope that everyone is enjoying the cooler evenings though the days have been filled with sunshine and a bit of unseasonal heat this month!

In advance of the Federal election on 3 May Berrigan Shire Council has published its Advocacy Document for 2025-2026.  The document, which has been distributed to all candidates for our local seat of Farrer, outlines how Council will work with higher tiers, our peers and industry partners on priority and strategic initiatives to deliver economic and social benefit for Berrigan Shire and the broader region.

The Advocacy Document covers a range of areas where we would like to see improvement including Health, Education, Training and Employment, Adaptive and Innovative (Agricultural) Industry, Planning and Housing, Water Utility and Trunk Infrastructure, Digital Connectivity and Sustainability.  I urge you all to take a look at the Advocacy Document and let us know if there are other areas that you believe we should focus on.

Earlier this month I was honoured to participate in the opening of Tocumwal Doctors.  I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Dr Ike and his team to Berrigan Shire and to note our appreciation that Dr Ike will have visiting privileges at the hospital in Tocumwal.

This month I have asked Councillor Matthew Hannan, our longest serving councillor, to contribute a few words.

Cr. Julia Cornwell McKean- Mayor

Councillor Matthew Hannan

My name is Matt Hannan, and I have proudly represented the Berrigan Shire as a councillor since 2008. I am deeply passionate about our community and have built strong personal, business, and industry relationships over this journey.

I believe in providing strong, stable, and well-informed decision-making. I have balanced views and am dedicated to listening to our communities and working alongside each other to achieve positive outcomes.

We face a variety of challenges in our role as councillors; however, through open communication, we can work towards outcomes that benefit our communities. I firmly believe we live in an area capable of managing sustainable growth and investment while protecting our natural landscapes and livelihoods.

To my fellow councillors, I look forward to working proactively with you all, sharing my experiences and knowledge. I would also encourage our community organizations, residents, and businesses to continue to be involved in the conversations. Together, we can share information and continue to showcase the Berrigan Shire for all its assets.

Let’s embrace opportunities, understand change, and provide positive, constructive feedback.
